Will my driver's license allow me to hire a car?
The USA has an agreement with most countries whereby the driver's full national driving licence may be used for a period of up to one year in the USA (provisional licences are not acceptable). Whatever your age, most companies ask that you have held a full licence for at least one year. The minimum age for hiring a car is normally 21, although it can sometimes be as high as 25. Additional charges may apply for drivers under 25 years of age.
If you are hiring a vehicle and are asked to provide evidence of your driving record, you can do so by accessing the Share Driving Licence service via the DVLA online for free. Alternatively, you can call DVLA and give permission for your driving record to be checked verbally by a nominated person/organisation for example hire car companies.
